Excerpts from Rev. Marc's 2004 Commencement Address to the One Spirit Interfaith Seminary:

"We come from so many places. We come from Israel and the Bronx. We come from Utah and Berkeley. We come from Virginia and Brooklyn and the northern plains of Canada. We come from churches and synagogues, from temples and halls. We come from Jewish and Buddhist and Sufi religions, from Christian and Taoist and Native American traditions. We come from black and brown and white and rainbow families. We come to pray and to learn, to speak and to praise. We come to worship and contemplate, to see and be seen. We come to debate and to argue, to commune and to heal. But most of all, we come to answer our dreams. We come because we are the people we’ve been waiting for.

We are your friends and colleagues, your mothers and fathers, your sons and brothers, your daughters and grandmothers, your sisters and uncles. We are your lovers and spouses, your partners and teachers. We are your regular customers. We are the first to admit our sins, and we are the last to leave your party. We are the people we’ve been waiting for.

Today, we gather in the most diverse city in the history of humanity where we celebrate, nay we instigate a new era, an era where the visions of our ancestors come true, where the hopes of our future become our legacy. We are indeed the people we’ve been waiting for.

Today we unwrap our gifts, and present them to the world. Today, we step into our calling as ministers, as reverends, as men and women of the cloth. Many of us don’t know what the far-reaching meaning of our ordination will be. But as we celebrate the moment of this passage, we know the humility and honor bestowed upon us by this confirmation. We are the people we’ve been waiting for.

None of us yet know the true extent of our ministries. We cannot know. But we have agreed to step up and embrace this chapter of our destiny. We walk into an unknown future with all the solidity of our faith, and the commitment of our vows to serve. For some of us, the change will appear small, the brightening of an inner glow. For some of us, the change will appear tremendous, an enlightening commitment to a new career. But let us not be mistaken about our last step on this segment of the journey. Today, we commence. Today we begin a new voyage. To my colleagues and teachers, I salute you all. The blessings of your efforts in our mutual growth have been invaluable. To our guests, one and all, the blessings of your presence at our joyous celebration confirm the place that awaits us. We are the people we’ve been waiting for. We are the people we’ve been waiting for. And this, right now, is the time."
